FD-5 was approached by residents of our north end to open a third Station in the Blueslide / Ruby Creek area. Currently we have two Stations in our district. We are training two volunteers that reside part-time in the Blueslide area. We need more to staff apparatus full time in Northend area. This station will start out as summer response during Wildland season this year. We hope to transition to a year round station within a year or two. We need people who are willing to be drivers, firefighters and EMTs.
Our biggest problem is that this area is composed of mostly Snow Birds or part-timers. Our next biggest problem is funds. We operate on 33,000 for two stations when the national average is 50,000 for one small volunteer station and we do it on 33,000 for two. Chief Foster says he can’t do three on that. The Fire Commissioners and Chief Foster are looking at funding solutions. Chief Foster has already started putting together equipment from donations and reduced price equipment. That only goes so far and extra funds are still needed.
